Wine For Everyone: National Wine Day!

Wine For Everyone- Vegan Wine

My VIP Life National Wine Day

To honor the International Wine Day this weekend we decided to look into why it is challenging to find wine for plant based lifestyle supporters.  Wine is a very unique drink because you can enjoy it together with almost every meal.  If you pair the right wine with the right food then the wine will allow your taste buds to enjoy your meal even more by emphasizing the taste.  Sadly, not everyone has an easy time to find wine.  If you are a plant based lifestyle supporter you might have a challenging time finding wine to enjoy.

Over the last few years plant based lifestyles becomes more popular.  Thanks to the people who raise awareness and popularity to veganism wine developers listened-  now you can enjoy vegan wine.  Are you surprised that most of the wines are not vegan?  Well.. so are we!

In theory, all the wines are vegan and it shouldn’t be hard to find it but the reality is very different.  To understand why, we need to look into the wine production process.

So, how do you make wine?  In simple words, all you need to do is to get fresh grape juice, add yeast and let it ferment for some time.  Voila!  You just made your first wine.

Sadly, the commercial wine production process doesn’t end here.  After the wine is ready you still have a good amount of grape sediment floating around.  Majority of wine consumers prefer sediment free wine.  In order for the sediment to settle on it’s own you need to give the wine a relatively long time to settle.  Most of the wine producers decide not to wait around.  To speed up the process winemakers use fining process.  Depending on the wine type (white or red)  winemakers can use albumin (egg whites), gelatin (from boiled animal parts), casein (protein of milk), isinglass (from fish bladders) and many more animal driven ‘filters’.  During the fining process sediment particles gloms onto animal ingredient particles.  After the fining process is done all the fining ingredients are removed from the wine but unfortunately the wine has still touched animal products.

Luckily for people living a plant-based diet, more wine makers decide to use plant based fining, let the wine settle on its own or skip the process fully.  Sadly, majority of winemakers don’t show their fining ingredients on the label so be sure to do your research before.  To start off, the brands like Frey Vineyards, The Vegan Wine and Red Truck Wines carries large collection on vegan wines.  Cheers!
